Aldara Cream – Proper use and application gives best results

with 16 comments

Aldara Cream is meant for external use only. It should not be taken orally or applied too close to the eyes, lips and nostrils. This cream should be used exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Like all medications, this cream too does not work for everybody. Aldara is only a treatment, not a cure and neither does it prevent the development of new warts nor can it stop the spread of genital warts to other people. Therefore, practicing safe sex is essential.

This cream should only be used on the area that requires treatment. Your doctor is the right person to advise you on how often and how long to apply this cream. You should stop using the cream after the prescribed time limit. Using this topical medication too much, too often, or too long can cause severe skin reactions or other unwanted valtrex side effects. Aldara is generally used once a day for 3 days a week on alternate days, unless prescribed otherwise. It should be left on the skin for about 6 to 10 hours. The treatment can be safely continued for up to 16 weeks. If this topical medication does not work for you, you can take Valtrex for cold sores, a prescription medication, that may work for you. Do consult your doctor before taking this medication.

Tips for proper application of Aldara

  • It should be applied just before going to bed
  • The area of treatment should be washed with mild soap and water and dried before application
  • When treating warts under the penis and foreskin, men should clean the area before treatment
  • A thin layer of the cream should be applied to the affected area; applying too much can cause skin reaction
  • Keep the cream away from your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Use the cream carefully when treating around the anus so that the cream does not get into the anus
  • Similarly, women applying this medication around the vaginal opening should take care
  • Store the cream in a safe place so that children and pets are prevented from coming into contact with this cream
  • Hands should be washed properly after applying this cream
  • The cream should be left on the affected area for about 8 hours before washing it off
  • In case you get the cream into your mouth or eyes, you should rinse immediately
